If a new LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener left every remote, keypad and car button in the house dead, nothing is broken. The security platform changed. Here is how to tell what you have, what replaces what, and how to get the button in your car working again.

The call usually comes the day after an opener is replaced, and it always sounds the same. The new unit runs perfectly from the wall button, and nothing else in the house works. The spare visor remote does nothing. The keypad by the side door does nothing. The button in the car that has opened this garage for six years does nothing. Somebody has already been told they need a new opener, or that the installer wired something wrong.
Nothing is wrong. If the opener was built in roughly the last year, it is almost certainly running Security+ 3.0, the newest security platform from LiftMaster and Chamberlain, and that platform will not talk to the previous generation of accessories. That is deliberate rather than a fault. Below is how to confirm it in about ten seconds, what genuinely replaces what, and the one step that gets the button in your car working again, which is the part most write-ups leave out.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain are the same manufacturer selling under two names, which is why this affects both. Every one of their openers has a learn button on the motor unit, usually behind the light lens or under a cover on the back panel, and its colour tells you which generation you own. Colour is a far more reliable test than the year on the box, because stock sits in warehouses for a long time.
If the button is any colour other than white, a remote that has stopped working has stopped for an ordinary reason: a flat battery, a pairing lost after a power cut, or a failing logic board. Rolling code security is not new. Every generation since the late 1990s has changed its code on each press, so the signal cannot be captured and replayed. What changed with Security+ 3.0 is the pairing itself.
The new openers pair over Bluetooth Low Energy and then run the door on an encrypted radio link. An older remote has no Bluetooth radio in it at all, so it cannot complete the handshake the opener now asks for. That distinction matters, because it explains why the usual workarounds fail. The problem is not that the opener does not recognise the old code. It is that the old remote cannot take part in the conversation that establishes trust in the first place.
It is also why the universal remotes and keypads that used to bridge two generations do not bridge this one. If a package promises compatibility with a long list of older units and does not name Security+ 3.0 specifically, assume it will not pair. The same goes for the older plug-in gateways and third party bridges that some smart home setups relied on.
LiftMaster ships a matching accessory line for Security+ 3.0, and the pattern is easy to spot once you know it: the newer parts carry an L prefix.
Treat that as a starting point rather than a shopping list. Model ranges get revised, and several accessories are sold in more than one variant. Before buying anything, photograph two things: the learn button, and the silver model and serial label on the side or back of the motor unit. Those two photographs answer the compatibility question with certainty, and any competent supplier or technician can confirm the right part from them in a minute. Guessing from a product listing is how people end up posting remotes back.
This is the complaint that causes the most frustration, because people assume the built-in HomeLink button in the visor or mirror is simply obsolete now. Usually it is not.
Security+ 3.0 works with HomeLink versions 4, 5 and 6, which covers most vehicles from roughly 2016 onward. The catch is the training procedure, and it is genuinely different from what everyone is used to.
Vehicle behaviour varies by make and model year, so treat the list above as the order to try things in rather than a guarantee. If the car will not accept the training once a new remote is in hand, that is worth a service visit rather than an afternoon of guessing.
The manufacturer's own app connectivity is built into these units, so remote opening, close alerts and activity history all work without an extra gateway. What changed is everything wireless that is not the manufacturer's own. Third party universal remotes, older bridges, and hubs that used to speak to the opener over its radio will generally not pair with Security+ 3.0.
The path that does remain open is the wired one. The wall control terminals on the motor unit still accept a plain dry contact, which is all a hardwired button is, so a wired relay can still trigger the door from another system. That is a deliberate installation decision rather than something to improvise. It sits outside the platform's own safeguards, so it belongs with somebody who will also confirm afterwards that the photo eyes and the auto reverse still behave correctly.
Three things get overstated whenever this comes up, and all three cost people money.
It does not mean your existing opener is obsolete. If your learn button is yellow, nothing has been switched off and nothing needs upgrading. A yellow button opener on a well balanced door can have another decade in it. Nobody should be selling you a new unit on the strength of a platform change that does not apply to the unit you own.
It does not mean you were sold the wrong opener. The accessory incompatibility is the trade for a tighter security model, and it is the direction the whole category is moving. It is a reasonable trade, as long as somebody tells you about it before the old remotes go in a drawer.
It does not mean every dead remote is a Security+ 3.0 problem. Far more remotes die of a flat coin cell than of a protocol change, and cold makes that worse, which brings us to the local part.
Two things about garages here are worth adding, because both produce symptoms that look like a pairing fault and are not.
The first is cold and remote batteries. A coin cell that reads fine indoors loses voltage in a car parked outside overnight at altitude, and the first thing to go is range rather than function. A remote that works from three feet but not from the end of the driveway in February is usually a battery, and it is worth changing one before anyone concludes the pairing has dropped.
The second is that a door which strains or reverses first thing in the morning is rarely a remote question at all. Meltwater runs under the bottom seal during the day and freezes to the concrete overnight, and a correctly set opener gives up rather than tearing the seal off. That is the force limits doing their job, and it gets checked at a maintenance and tune-up visit rather than fixed with a new transmitter.
Look at the learn button. If it is white, you have Security+ 3.0, your older remotes and keypads will not pair with it, and the replacements are the L series accessories. If it is yellow or older, none of this applies and the dead remote has an ordinary cause. Either way, photograph the learn button and the model label before buying anything. And if the button in your car has stopped working, get one new handheld remote first, then train the car from that.

Yes, and it is often the sensible thing to do. Buy the current L series remote that matches your opener, confirmed from the model label rather than from a generic compatibility chart, and pair it from the wall control or the learn button following the instructions in the box. If you want a spare anyway, order it before you program the car, because the car needs a working remote to train from.
Not directly. This is a LiftMaster and Chamberlain platform change, and it also reaches openers those factories build under other labels, which historically has included some Craftsman units. Genie runs its own system and is unaffected. If you are not sure whose opener you have, the model label settles it.
Start with the battery, then re-pair the remote, then check whether the wall console has a lock feature switched on, which silently disables handheld remotes and catches people out regularly. If all three are clear, the receiver logic board is the usual culprit, and on a unit otherwise worth keeping that is a repair rather than a replacement.
It is a real improvement on paper. Requiring a Bluetooth handshake before a device is trusted closes off the class of attacks that target the radio link alone, which is the direction access control has been moving generally. Whether that justifies replacing a drawer of working accessories is a fair question, and it is one to weigh at purchase time rather than after the old opener has gone.
